PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Windows and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

Most JCU computers will come with PuTTY pre-installed.  Installation onto your personal computing device should be very straightforward.
Note: You don't have to follow the installations instructions below.

Using PuTTY to connect to a HPC Cluster Login Node

Open PuTTY.

Expand the Category space as shown.

Click inside the Enable X11 forwarding checkbox.

Click on Session (you may need to scroll up).

Enter zodiac.hpc.jcu.edu.au in the Host Name (or IP address) field. Note that zodiac represents an SSH gateway to the HPC CPU cluster, although current (Feb-2019) login nodes have CPU and GPU resources that can be used interactively.

Enter 8822 in the Port field.

Ensure that the Connection type is set to SSH.

Choose a name for the connection - HPC is just a suggestion.

Click the Save button.

Now click on the Open button to establish a connection to the service you have selected.

You may see a window popup that looks like:

Click on the Yes button if there is a fingerprint match.


You will be presented with a terminal window (see below), awaiting the entering of your JCU username and password.
