This module enables participants to develop knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to whom they provide a service, demonstrating an understanding of Australian socio-political history and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary socio-political survival and resilience. Participants will demonstrate awareness and understanding of the fundamental values that are important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: respect, equity, equality, responsibility, reciprocity, spirit, integrity and 'country'. Participants will explore and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and community representatives through community-based activities using recognised processes for engaging and communicating effectively, through applying general cultural and local community protocols.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and describe the community characteristics, needs and priorities;
  • Compile a community profile that will inform the health professionals role in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community context;
  • Engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members according to general cultural and local community protocols to develop social and professional networks;
  • Examine and demonstrate an understanding of cultural safety/competence and its relevance to their role within the community.
