This subject provides students with the knowledge required to successfully provide clinical care in the paediatric and neonatal secondary (interfacility) retrieval setting. Basic principles of interfacility care will be reviewed and form the contextual environment for the subject. Specific areas of paediatric and neonatal clinical care likely to be encountered in the secondary retrievals environment will be examined in detail. There will also be a focus on the impact of the aeromedical environment on patients, procedures and equipment. The subject will provide students with not just the knowledge needed to provide paediatric and neonatal care in the aeromedical environment, but also knowledge of the evidence and theory underpinning these constructs.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the key physiological differences and physiological responses to injury and critical illness between neonates, infants, older children and adults;
  • outline specific equipment selection for use in the aeromedical retrieval environment specific to neonates, infants and older children;
  • outline the management of the critically ill child, pre term and term neonate in the aeromedical retrieval environment;
  • outline the crew mix required for aeromedical retrieval of the pediatric and neonatal patient;
  • outline the specific challenges of the pediatric and neonatal patient in the aeromedical environment.
Assumed
Knowledge:
Student must have previous knowledge regarding provision of medical care in critical care settings. This subject DOES NOT teach critical care medicine. It teaches application of critical care medicine in the unique retrieval environment.
Prerequisites: A medical, nursing or allied health degree/ qualification and at least 2 years full time experience (or equivalent part time experience) in a critical care environment". Student are required to submit a current CV with their applications as approval from the subject coordinators is required prior to acceptance into subject.
