In this subject pre-service teachers will critically examine and explore practices associated with teaching and learning. They will develop a knowledge base of what is and influences learning. As well they will develop understanding of the practices for collecting, analysing and interpreting information about learners and use this information for planning of individual lessons. They will also critially examine a variety of pedagogical frameworks, especially those currently being used in northern Queensland schools. Strategies for developing positive learning environments with emphasis on behaviour support and management are emphasized. Further they will develop an understanding of ICT use and how ICTs can be used to influence learning. Pre-service teachers will develop a professional portfolio in which they address the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers with a particular focus on numeracy, literacy and technology. Pre-service teachers are required to undertake fifteen (15) days of professional experience in educational settings, and participate in five (5) days of professional development as part of Professional Orientation Week.

Learning Outcomes

  • collaborate with school-based teachers and peers to develop and evaluate professional practices;
  • assess their own personal language literacy and numeracy and develop explicit evidenced-based teaching strategies for same;
  • examine and critically analyse policies and evidence-informed principles and strategies of behaviour management;
  • develop lesson and program planning skills relevant to current curriculum frameworks;
  • develop teaching strategies that promote intellectually challenging learning experiences.
