to students enrolled in the BEd (Early Childhood Education)
This subject is an introduction to contemporary theories and practices about language
and literacy education for children from birth to 18 years. The subject introduces
concepts involved in discussing and analysing language and discourse, with a central
emphasis on how both spoken and written language works in social contexts. Topics
include language and culture; the development of language and literacy; second language
learning and classroom talk. There is also a focus on academic writing and critical
approaches to media texts. This subject examines theories and practices pertaining
to language acquisition, literacy teaching and learning, and oracy. It also provides
'real life' examples as a means of contextualising theories and making these relevant
to the world of teaching. The content presented in this subject bears relevance to
early childhood, primary, middle and secondary schooling contexts, and to all subject
areas - adopting and promoting a cross-curricular approach.
