ME2525 - Machine Element Design

An introduction to the design process. Exercise in design and construction. Functional and spatial design using layout and assembly drawings. Size tolerancing. Structural design; design to resist excessive deflection, yielding failure and fatigue failure. Machine design using standard machine elements and components. Introduction to the analysis and design of mechanical components such as shafts, bearings, keys, splines, gears, brakes, clutches, springs, bolted and welded joints.

Learning Outcomes

  • be able to analyse and design common machine elements;
  • be able to communicate machine element designs through the use of assembly, working and detail drawings;
  • become more conversant with the design process;
  • become more familiar with the range and function of common machine elements. Students should be able to apply this knowledge to generating new, innovative designs.
