Introduction to International marine jurisdictions; internal waters, historic bays, islands, territorial sea and baselines; contiguous zones, exclusive economic zone, continental shelf, high seas, deep-sea-bed, delimitation between maritime zones and the regime of marine scientific research. The exploitation of marine resources, fisheries and minerals will be examined. The subject will also focus on the legal regime governing navigational rights and freedoms, marine safety, pilotage, port state control and marine pollution.

Learning Outcomes

  • A sound understanding of the operation of the law of the sea, both at a regional and international level.
Prerequisites: LA1101 and LA1102 and LA1103 and LA1104 and LA3105
