A broad introduction to contemporary biology, from the way cells, organs and individual organisms function, through to molecular biology, genetics and the processes underlying the diversity of life and ecosystems.

Learning Outcomes

  • to gain an appreciation of the relationship between structure and function of cells and cellular organelles;
  • to learn about the basic principles of cellular activities;
  • to understand the basics of ecology and evolutionary biology;
  • to understand the basics of the mechanism of inheritance;
  • to gain an appreciation of the cellular basis of living organisms.

Students enrolling in this subject should have a good understanding of Chemistry, Mathematics and English to Grade 12 (Queensland) or equivalents. Students without high school chemistry should have completed CH1020.
