In this technology and innovation subject, students will complete three compulsory modules, and will choose an additional three optional modules. The compulsory modules cover pitching to investors, designing for the future and storytelling with Geographic Information Systems-(GIS). Students will learn how to design pitch decks for investors and different audiences, the art of pitching and the basics of marketing. The second module will introduce design-led innovation as a way of thinking to drive innovation for products, services and processes. Students learn how to approach problem solving techniques to address megatrends and designing for an unknown future to improve society, cities and economies through design innovation. The GIS module aims to provide an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as hands-on experience using a GIS and demonstrates how GIS can be used in effective storytelling.

Learning Outcomes

  • use a range of skills and tools to prepare a pitch deck and deliver a pitch for a new invention;
  • create original and entrepreneurial design-led strategies and solutions;
  • appraise and critique the role and relevance of design innovation in society, particularly in creating sustainable futures in the tropics, worldwide;
  • analyse spatial data and create effective maps using industry standard GIS software;
  • work in teams to collect spatial data answering a real-world question and communicate the findings effectively.
