RH1002 - Communication Skills for Health Professionals

In this subject students will explore and develop skills towards excellence in both written and oral professional communication. Lectures and workshop activities will promote self-awareness, reflective learning, development of culturally safe communication, applied listening and questioning, academic research and writing, and professional communication skills. Students will examine and practice the application of communication skills in challenging circumstances and develop knowledge of appropriate communication across a variety of urban, rural and remote contexts. The importance of academic literacy and critical thinking will be emphasised throughout the subject and students will be equipped with knowledge and resources that will act as a foundation for future learning.

Learning Outcomes

  • research and write assignments that conform to the norms of academic writing and referencing;
  • critically review and reflect upon personal and professional communication skills in order to promote strategies for ongoing development as a student and a health professional;
  • analyse cultural influences upon effective communication and demonstrate knowledge and skills in communication that facilitate culturally safe practice;
  • adopt verbal and non-verbal communication skills that ensure interactions with clients, carers and colleagues are professional and ethical.

  • assignments (50%).

Special Assessment Requirements

In order to pass this subject, you must achieve 50% or greater for the written assignment AND for the presentation; achieve 50% or greater for the subject assessment overall (including after the application of any penalties such as late penalties); attend and participate in 80% of workshops; complete all assessment pieces.
