OT1011 - Introduction to Occupation and Occupational Therapy

Available to occupational therapy students only.

The purpose of this subject is to establish an understanding of the meaning and concept of occupation and to be able to apply an occupational perspective to human situations. Students will engage with the occupational therapy community and identify the foundational processes that underpin occupational therapy practice for enabling change.

Learning Outcomes

  • define and analyse occupation and apply approaches to studying and classifying the relationship to occupation and time use;
  • apply an occupational framework to understanding own experience of occupation over life span and the influence of personal and environmental factors in occupation choice and development;
  • describe the breadth and scope of occupational therapy practice with individuals, families, groups, communities, organisations and populations at an introductory level;
  • define and apply core concepts of occupational therapy practice including occupational therapy process, professional reasoning and interactions of person, environment and occupation at an introductory level.

Subject Assessment

  • end of semester exam (50%)
  • assignments (50%).

Special Assessment Requirements

All assessment materials must be submitted to pass the subject. A grade of 50% or more on the final examination must be achieved to pass the subject overall. Students will be required to conduct an interview as part of the assessment requirements for this subject. Students must attend and participate in at least 80% of workshops.
