WS5021 - Advanced Contemporary Practice

[Not offered in 2023]

Credit points: 3
Year: 2023
Student Contribution Band: Band 4
Administered by: College of Arts, Society & Education

This subject introduces students to contemporary contexts for social work practice across a broad range of settings, themes and topics to prepare them for increasing complexities and unpredictable, possibly volatile policy and working environments, in response to major social justice challenges, both existing and emerging. These include post pandemic issues of inequality, environmental challenges, and increasing poverty as armed conflicts contribute to cost of living pressures in Australia. In these situations, the already marginalised are further excluded from civil, social and political citizenship, due to entrenched hardship and a diminishing welfare state marked by reduced access to entitlements and increasing bureaucratic and administrative hurdles. It emphasizes the role of social justice in Australian social work, and explores how it underpins and informs social work practices in both emerging and contemporary contexts.
