Public Health Nutrition utilises nutrition knowledge and theory to promote health and to prevent both infectious and chronic disease conditions. This subject will introduce students to public health nutrition concepts which can be applied to enhance population health, and to reduce the morbidity and mortality due to chronic diseases, and other nutrition related conditions, particularly in the tropics. The subject will provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate public health nutrition interventions both in Australia, and in low and middle income countries in the tropics, where the double burden of under nutrition and chronic disease accompanies economic and nutrition transition,. Specific areas which will be covered include: food supply and composition of the diet of pre-agricultural, historic and modern populations, the thrifty genotype and thrifty phenotype hypotheses, the concepts of energy density and nutrient density, nutrition requirements at different life stages, the Australian Nutrient Recommended Values and Dietary Guidelines, the nutrition and health status of the Australian population and burden of disease related to poor nutrition, nutrition and health of the populations of emerging economies of the tropical world, social determinants of nutrition, the concept of food security at national, community and household level, nutrition and growth in early life and relationship to health in adult life and subsequent generations, type 1 and type 2 nutrients, under-nutrition in early life, common nutrition deficiency diseases, energy balance and childhood and adult overweight and obesity, anthropometry and other indicators of nutrition status, the interrelationship of tobacco and nutrition, the interrelationship of nutrition, infection and inflammation, the nutrition and health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other First Nation population groups, the politics of food and economics of obesity, Food Standards in Australia and New Zealand including food labelling, food systems and issues in food retailing and marketing in Australia, contemporary public health nutrition policy in Australia and the region.
