TM5577 - Paediatric and Neonatal Retrievals

This subject provides students with the knowledge required to successfully provide clinical care in the paediatric and neonatal secondary (interfacility) retrieval setting. Basic principles of interfacility care will be reviewed and form the contextual environment for the subject. Specific areas of paediatric and neonatal clinical care likely to be encountered in the secondary retrievals environment will be examined in detail. There will also be a focus on the impact of the aeromedical environment on patients, procedures and equipment. The subject will provide students with not just the knowledge needed to provide paediatric and neonatal care in the aeromedical environment, but also knowledge of the evidence and theory underpinning these constructs.

Learning Outcomes

• examine the key physiological differences and responses to injury and critical illness between neonates, infants and children;
• compare and contrast the differences between standard hospital based care and aeromedical retrievals of the neonate and paediatric patient;
• analyse the challenges that are specific to the neonatal and paediatric patient in the aeromedical environment;
• evaluate the key aspects for crew configuration, asset selection and communication for neonatal and paediatric retrievals;
• analyse the common clinical conditions and key clinical procedures likely to be encountered in the aeromedical retireval of a neonate or paediatric patient.

Special Assessment Requirements

In order to pass this subject, you must submit all items of assessment and obtain an overall (cumulative) total mark of 50% or more
