TM5576 - Adult Secondary Retrievals

This subject provides students with the knowledge required to successfully provide clinical care in the adult secondary (interfacility) retrieval setting. Basic principles of interfacility care will be reviewed and form the contextual environment for the subject. Specific areas of clinical care likely to be encountered in the secondary retrievals environment will be examined in detail. There will also be a focus on the impact of the aeromedical environment on patients, procedures and equipment. The subject will provide students with not just the knowledge needed to provide patient care, but also knowledge of the evidence and theory underpinning these constructs.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically analyse the role of secondary retrievals in the aeromedical environment;
  • compare and contrast the differences between standard hospital based health care and all phases of secondary retrievals;
  • evaluate the key aspects for communication and documentation for secondary retrievals;
  • analyse the common clinical conditions and key clinical procedures likely to be encountered with particular emphasis on critical care patients requiring secondary retrievals;
  • analyse the role of secondary retrievals in potential or actual mass casualty incidents with reference to site organisation and relationships with other key participants.
Student must have previous knowledge regarding provision of medical care in critical care settings. This subject DOES NOT teach critical care medicine. It teaches application of critical care medicine in the unique retrieval environment.
Prerequisites: Students not admitted in the Graduate Certificate of Aeromedical Retrieval must submit a current CV outlining a medical, nursing or allied health degree/qualification and at least 2 years full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in a critical care environment for approval by the Subject Coordinator prior to enrolment into the subject.
