This subject will prepare participants for international work in emergency response
settings, particularly focused on displaced populations. Topics covered include: international
humanitarian law, rapid assessment, organisation and coordination, basic epidemiology
in emergency settings, disease control, vaccination, nutrition, reproductive health,
water, sanitation & shelter and health and safety of the field worker. Guest lecturers
with extensive field experience and technical expertise from a range of organisations
contribute to this subject. This subject is suitable for both clinical and non-clinical
participants.
Learning Outcomes
- Articulate the major public health issues in an emergency setting;
- apply humanitarian principles in refugee settings;
- Discuss the organisation of health services and the multi-sectorial approach to reduce
the health impact in emergency settings;
- Evaluate the public health situation in an emergency setting and propose appropriate
responses;
- Approach an emergency refugee setting with insight into the challenges faced by humanitarian
workers.
Subject Assessment
- Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
- Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Group
- Written > Brief - (50%) - Individual.
Special Assessment Requirements
Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more; Complete and submit all three (3) assessment
items; Complete and submit the hurdle assessment
