SL2011 - Speech Pathology Processes A

This subject introduces students to speech pathology clinical processes and competencies through class and experiential clinical activities. In this subject, knowledge, skills and professional attributes as outlined in CBOS 2011 will be discussed, with an emphasis on client centred and evidence based approaches to the management of communication difficulties and on types of hearing loss. Students will be introduced to central auditory processing disorders (CAPD), hearing measurement and testing, the impact of loss of hearing across the lifespan and the role of speech pathology in management of hearing loss. Students will apply basic principles required for speech pathology assessment and intervention including integration of prior learning (such as acoustics, phonetics, linguistics and anatomy) to speech pathology assessment and treatment to understand the principles of speech pathology practice. Students will undertake observations and clinical placements with supervision and guidance from clinical educators.

  • evaluate and employ a variety of approaches in assessment and management of communication disorders;

  • review and apply the CBOS 2011 (Compentency Based Occupational Standards 2011, Speech Pathology Australia), the Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics (2010), the International Classification of Function, and the principles of Evidence Based Practice, adult learning and group work to clinical practice.

The student workload for this 3 credit point subject is approximately 130 hours.

Assessment: end of semester exam (35%); quizzes or tests (20%); assignments (15%); assignment - learning plan (30%); hurdle clinical placement (%).
Special Assessment Requirements: Students must pass every individual assessment item in order to pass the subject. In order to pass the end of semester exam and the on-course test, students must also pass both the audiology and speech pathology sections of each. Students are required to attend at least 80% of all scheduled classes and must complete all scheduled placement hours.
