SL1004 - Linguistics and Phonetics 2

This subject builds on the topics introduced in SL1002 and introduces more advanced linguistics concepts as a basis for studies in speech pathology including transcription of disordered speech, prosody, semantics and pragmatics. This subject introduces how these various aspects of language are learned. The diversity of languages and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, varieties of English and the significance of this diversity to speech pathology practice will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • apply knowledge and skills in analysing grammatical forms;
  • describe the normal development of the basic structures and uses of language;
  • demonstrate and apply knowledge of the ways that language is used to convey meanings and to achieve speakers' purposes;
  • explain the concepts of linguistic diversity in Australia and apply this knowledge to speech pathology practice.
Prerequisites: SL1002allow concurrent for SL1002.

Assessment: end of semester exam (40%); quizzes or tests (40%); assignments (20%); hurdle professional experience (%).
Special Assessment Requirements: Students must achieve at least 50% in all individual weighted assessment items, must pass the non-weighted hurdle assessment, and achieve at least 50% overall to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes and must attend all professional experience hours.
