RH5201 - Rehabilitation for Disability across the Lifespan

Applicants must have completed at least a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Speech Pathology at an Australian University or hold an equivalent international entry level qualification in one of these professions. Note: Completion of the subject will not enable Australian registration of overseas qualified health professionals.

This subject is designed to extend student knowledge, clinical and case management skills with respect to the long-term management of people living life with a disability. The focus will be on people from regional, rural, remote and Indigenous communities. Populations will include those with complex congenital or acquired injury or disease that has resulted in long-term disability and significant lifestyle adaptation. Such groups of people may include those with acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis: conditions that impact on mobility, self-care and independent living. Emphasis is on the knowledge and application of Community Rehabilitation core competencies to optimise functional potential and quality of life. Consideration is also given to cost effectiveness of services delivered. Self-directed work will consider the lifespan sequelae of specific complex conditions and complex circumstances and it will be supported by written, oral and visual teaching materials and videoconference.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse and develop, at an advanced level, appropriate rehabilitation plans or programs for a range of conditions (pathologies) and identify where modification, according to location, community or lifespan changes is required;
  • describe and interpret allied health services required for comprehensive rehabilitation for a client with a potentially disabling condition across a range of pathologies;
  • acquire and demonstrate, at an advanced level, effective and appropriate clinical reasoning for case management for these clients.
