Enrolment in this subject is for students enrolled in the occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology degrees and the diploma of health science.

The subject provides students with opportunities to gain an understanding of the role of Allied Health Professionals within the modern health care environment. The subject explores therapist-patient relationships and equips students with skills and knowledge they will utilise in future clinical placements and practice. Professionalism and inter-professional constructs will be examined and discussed specifically with regard to the Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and Physiotherapy professions. Students will learn skills which are fundamental to successful and safe practice across a range of health settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate an understanding of the range of influencing factors upon client functionality and personal attitudes and perspectives on health management;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the documentary frameworks within which health and health related disorders are identified and managed;
  • demonstrate the requisite practical skills appropriate to inter-professional allied health practice across a range of healthcare settings;
  • demonstrate an understanding of professional identity, professional roles and appropriate inter-professional practice which will be required of the student in clinical experiences and future clinical practice;
  • demonstrate an awareness of issues related to and methods to ensure the maintenance of personal safety, ethical standards and effective clinical relationships and service delivery in the health care setting, including considerations for practice in a cross-cultural environment.

Assessment: end of semester exam (60%); presentations (15%); assignments (25%).
Special Assessment Requirements: To pass this subject students must pass the final exam (obtain 50% or more). Students must demonstrate competence in safe patient handling, infection control measures, measurement of vital signs and prescription and use of mobility aids. These are hurdle requirements to pass this subject (ie assessed as Pass/Fail). Students may be offered an opportunity to resit the competency assessment at the discretion of the Subject Co-ordinator.
