Students will complete a minimum of 1000 hours placement across all practicum subjects
within the Master of Psychology (Clinical) program at James Cook University. In this
placement subject, students will complete at least 300 hours of practice working with
diverse populations within regional, rural, remote, or tropical health contexts. Under
supervision, students will demonstrate the application of evidence-based clinical,
professional and interprofessional skills to provide effective, ethical, and culturally
responsive assessments and interventions for diverse client groups. Critical self-reflexive
practice and engagement in feedback processes are central to the placement experience
to facilitate ongoing professional learning and develop quality practice.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply, evaluate, and develop specialised knowledge and evidence-based clinical skills
to provide effective, safe, and culturally appropriate assessments and interventions
for diverse clients, including those with severe, complex, and/or chronic mental health
presentations;
- Demonstrate specialised communication skills with clients, families, community and
organisational representatives, and other health professionals to facilitate quality
outcomes for diverse populations, including those with severe, complex, and/or chronic
mental health presentations;
- Demonstrate specialised skills to work individually, and collaboratively within the
interprofessional health care team for severe, complex, and/or chronic mental health
presentations, in accordance with legal, ethical, and organisational guidelines and
behaviour standards;
- Demonstrate ownership of ongoing, specialised professional learning as evidenced by
critical self-reflective practice, engagement with and use of feedback, and the development
of personalised learning plans and objectives to develop quality practice for severe,
complex, and/or chronic mental health presentations.
