Health and safety, both physical and psychological, are important facets of organisational productivity and success. Therefore, occupational stress and its management with regards to coping mechanisms, strategies, and resources have increasingly become a focal point for organisational psychologists. This subject provides an overview of the workplace theories that focus on factors contributing to mental health and wellbeing at the workplace. It also includes understanding of psychological (e.g., stress, burnout) and social (e.g., social support) contexts that contribute to wellbeing for employees. The subject also examines individual (e.g., work engagement, resilience) and organisational (e.g., leadership, culture) factors that enhance psychological wellbeing at the workplace. Collaborative work on presentations and case studies provide direct avenues for developing skills to promote a positive organisational environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Employ knowledge of recent developments in major theories of workplace psychology to identify key factors responsible for healthy and safe workplaces;
  • Identify sources of occupational stress and its management;
  • Apply creative and strategic approaches at individual and organisational levels to minimise negative impact of burnout and enhance psychological wellbeing at the workplace;
  • Demonstrate technical skills in solving challenges associated with workplace psychological health.

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Case study analysis - (30%) - Individual
  • Written > Literature review - (40%) - Individual
  • Part A: Performance/Practice/Product - multimedia production, group 20%; Part B: Written - synopsis, individual 10% - (30%) - Group & Individual.

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties, and attempt and submit all assessments.
