Assessing and selecting individuals for organisational entry, role transfer, or promotion are key activities in all organisations. Similarly, training and development are organisational functions that rely on sound knowledge of assessment principles as well as theories of learning and growth. This subject provides a comprehensive overview of the psychological concepts underlying personnel assessment, selection, and development. The subject also reveals the evidence-based organisational practices that leverage these theories to drive organisational performance. The subject will explore topics in assessment and selection ranging from job analysis and human capital strategy to assessment and selection methods. A focus is given to training and development topics such as needs analysis, training methods, and succession planning. Psychological theories of individual differences, development, learning, motivation, and measurement provide the subject's conceptual underpinning.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the need to align assessment and selection approaches with organisational strategy and insights from job analysis;
  • Evaluate assessment and selection methods in terms of their reliability, validity, and efficiency; and with respect to the legal and cultural context;
  • Assess individual difference constructs in terms of their relevance to organisational fit and employee performance;
  • Analyse the training and development needs of individuals and organisations.

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties, and attempt and submit all assessments.
