The goal of interpersonal communication is social influence. As such, effective communication
skills are important for any individual seeking to influence others. Effective communicators
are adept at interpreting verbal and nonverbal cues in others, and are skilful at
using verbal and nonverbal behaviour to influence others. Understanding communication
processes is a core focus in social psychology. This subject reviews key findings
from social psychology in relation to communication theory and practice. Students
will develop communication skills suitable across a range of audiences and settings.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply social psychology theory and practice to the field of communication;
- Present ideas and proposals effectively to a range of audiences;
- Demonstrate skills in resolving complex problems through negotiation, mediation, and
conflict management.
Subject Assessment
- Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Individual
- Written > Proposal - (40%) - Individual
- Oral > Presentation 2 - (30%) - Individual.
Special Assessment Requirements
Achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties,
and attempt and submit all assessments.
