OT4006 - Advanced Rural and Urban Practice Perspectives

Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Accelerated Program.

This subject will provide students with an opportunity to further integrate their learning gained from previous practice education and is an alternate subject to OT4001, for students completing the accelerated course or an alternate progression through the course. The subject should be completed in conjunction with OT3007 occupational therapy practice education requirements. The focus of this subject will be on the student developing a higher level of professional skills and competencies, and further advancing their clinical reasoning skills and reflective practice through the integration of practical and course components. As part of this subject, students will complete a minimum of 608 hours (16 weeks at 38 hours/week) of advanced supervised practice education placements with flexible support from the University. The placement will be either rural or urban at an advanced level and will enable the student to apply, develop, analyse and integrate the theories, principles and practice of occupational therapy in a variety of settings. Students may be required to undertake placements in a facility away from the campus at which they are currently enrolled, at their own expense.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate competency in observation and evaluation of function or dysfunction in activities affecting independent living in relation to culturally specific requirements;
  • demonstrate competency in the re-evaluation of clients safety, independence, change in health status following occupational therapy intervention and the culturally specific requirements of the client;
  • demonstrate competent skills in self directed learning;
  • demonstrate, analyse and apply data collection techniques for total quality management of the client or training facility;
  • develop individual aims of intervention and outcomes of practice for clients referred for occupational therapy intervention and demonstrate competent clinical reasoning;
  • develop individual objectives for their own professional development. The student will demonstrate good time management skills;
  • need to achieve competency for personal accreditation and registration requirements.

Special Assessment Requirements: This subject will receive a grade of satisfactory/unsatisfactory. All assessment tasks must be passed to acheive a satisfactory grade in this subject.
