OT2014 - Contextual Determinants of Occupation

This subject is only available to students enrolled in occupational therapy.

The purpose of this subject is to allow students to apply their knowledge of the impact of physical, social, cultural and institutional contextual elements in engagement in occupation. The subject also aims to enable students to integrate, focus and apply knowledge and skills gained across all second year occupational therapy subjects.

Learning Outcomes

  • evaluate strategies that address contextual factors that cause occupational disruption, alienation and injustice for individuals, groups and communities;
  • appraise and select information gathering strategies that are appropriate to the needs and situations of individuals, groups and communities;
  • appraise and design enabling strategies that are appropriate to address issues of occupational dysfunction in individuals, groups and communities;
  • identify, evaluate and discuss the ways in which physical, social, cultural and institutional contextual factors influence engagement in occupation;
  • describe, analyse and reflect on the role of OT within various practice contexts and demonstrate competence in professional communication.

Workload expectations:

The student workload for this 3 credit point subject is approximately 130 hours.

  • 26 hours lectures - 2 hrs per week
  • 26 hours workshops/Seminars - 2 hrs per week
  • 38 hours placement
  • assessment and self-directed study
Assessment: end of semester exam (40%); presentations (20%); assignments (40%); clinical placement tasks (pass/fail): workbook, evaluation form, attendance record (%).
Special Assessment Requirements: In order to pass this subject, you must: complete and submit ALL assessment tasks; attend and participate in at least 80% of all workshops; achieve 50% or more on the final exam; obtain a minimum of 50% overall for the subject (including after the application of any penalties such as late penalties) and complete and pass the 1 week clinical placement and clinical placement tasks.
