This subject will focus on the foundational principles relating to qualitative research
design and the strengths and weaknesses of different qualitative methodologies. This
subject will focus on a range of methods and techniques including field studies, in
depth interviewing, and case studies and will also consider ethics and rigor related
to qualitative research. Each element of research design will be covered, from recognising
research paradigms and sampling strategies through to analysis of qualitative data.
As part of this subject, students will learn how to design and plan qualitative research
as sources of evidence in healthcare.
Learning Outcomes
- Summarise findings of qualitative data analysis to generate original knowledge;
- Appraise various qualitative research paradigms and explain how they impact on the
design and conduct of qualitative research;
- Devise research questions suitable for qualitative research;
- Synthesise and analyse primary data collected from qualitative research.
Subject Assessment
- Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (15%) - Individual
- Oral > Presentation 1 - (45%) - Individual
- Written > Proposal - (40%) - Individual.
Special Assessment Requirements
Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative
score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
