NS4004 - Complex Maternity Care

This subject continues to build on the midwife's role in complex perinatal care situations and developing earlier learning, concentrating on pre-existing maternal disease. It focuses on pathological (or potentially pathological) factors related to biological, psychological, cultural and social aspects of pregnancy and birth.

Learning Outcomes

  • provide justifiable midwifery care in collaboration with other members of the health care team for women with particular social, physical, emotional, intellectual and educational health care needs;
  • distinguish between normal and altered physiology in clinical emergency situations for an identified range of pre-existing and emergent obstetric conditions;
  • examine the evidence, protocols, techniques and equipment used in the identification and management of an recognised range of clinical emergency situations;
  • reflect on the care and advice given to women in difficult and sensitive situations;
  • evaluate strategies for supporting the woman and her family experiencing physical and emotional pain, bereavement and loss;
  • demonstrate safe, ethical practice, recognising own limitations and scope of practice and complying with the NMBA (2018) Midwife Standards for Practice, state and federal legal requirements and Codes of Professional Conduct.
