NS3228 - Midwifery Practice and Complex Care

This subject builds student knowledge of physiological and pathophysiological processes to meet the needs of women requiring complex care due to complications of pregnancy. Students will examine the assessment, planning and evaluation of midwifery care that meets the needs of women within a multi-discipline team.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiological processes that may impact on the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum;
  • describe the role of the midwife in promoting woman centred care when complex collaborative care is required;
  • appraise the use of available health technology to support midwifery care in a complex care environment;
  • evaluate evidence based practice in the provision of care for women with complex needs.

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Participation > Class participation - (%) - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Recruit 2 women for Continuity of Care Experiences; must pass hurdle assessment - (%) - Individual
  • Written > Workbook - (%) - Individual.

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled on-campus tutorial classes; achieve a satisfactory grade for the K2 modules; achieve at least 50% for the examination; recruit 2 women as CCE; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period.
