NS3003 - Pregnancy Continuum: At Risk Events

This subject is an integration of theory and practice to develop clinical expertise in the care of women in pregnancy experiencing at-risk event.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1) apply knowledge of the pathophysiological changes in reproduction as they relate to foetal growth and development; transition to extra- uterine life; pregnancy, the four stages of labour and birth and the first six weeks after birth to midwifery care of the woman and baby who have pre-existing complications or develop complications;
  • 2) evaluate the impact of stigma and labelling of women as 'high-risk' or 'non-compliant'; 3) provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and ANMC (2006) Midwifery Competency Standards;
  • 4) apply Page's five steps of evidence based practice to midwifery care provided during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period to women whose pregnancy is complicated by a pre-existing health condition or who develop a health complication during pregnancy. birth and the first postpartum weeks;
  • 5) demonstrate the ability to work in collaboration with other members of the health care team to meet the needs of women with particular social, physical, emotional, intellectual, educational or health care requirements; and;
  • 6) discuss the psycho-social impact on woman and her family when 'at risk' events occur in pregnancy, childbirth and the first weeks after birth.
