NS2221 - Planning and Promoting a Healthy Pregnancy

The underpinning philosophy of woman-centered, value based care is foundational to this subject. Students will explore aspects of pregnancy planning, reproduction, conception and fetal development and how these influence the outcome of a healthy newborn baby. In particular, students will focus on the promotion of a healthy outcome of pregnancy and the midwife's advocacy role to support women to make choices about their care.

Learning Outcomes

  • outline the evidence base for continuity of care in support of a woman centred approach to midwifery care;
  • explain the anatomy and physiology across the continuum of care;
  • describe the role of the midwife in screening and assessment in promoting a healthy pregnancy outcome;
  • plan and implement strategies for ethical and culturally safe midwifery care including the provision of education and information using appropriate media technologies;
  • apply the NMBA Midwifery Standards for Practice (2018) in supporting woman centred care.

  • Recruit 2 women for Continuity of Care Experiences; must pass hurdle assessment - (%) - Individual

  • 10% group oral presentation; 10% individual case notes - (20%) - Group & Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Professional placement performance - (%) - Individual.

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorial classes; participate in all clinical skills classes; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve at least 50% for the examination; achieve a satisfactory grade for the portfolio assessment task and PEP; recruit two women for CCE. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period.
