This subject explores issues that impact on the provision of nursing and midwifery
care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students undertaking this subject
will develop awareness of the historical, social and cultural issues that influence
the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This increased awareness
will enable students to acquire critical and reflective skills to provide nursing
and midwifery care in a culturally safe manner.
Learning Outcomes
- Reflect on and apply the principles of cultural safety to the care of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Peoples;
- Examine the impact of historical events on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples'
access and engagement with health services;
- Discuss strengths and challenges in delivering healthcare with respect to the social
and cultural determinants of health and the National Agreement on Closing the Gap;
- Evaluate strategies for delivering healthcare that builds trust and relationships
with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
- Define the principles of cultural safety and how these promote person-centred care.

Special Assessment Requirements
