This subject introduces the student to the legal and ethical obligations nurses and
midwives have in maintaining safety of the public. Students will explore the Australian
legal system and discuss the ethical principles that frame nursing and midwifery practice.
Students will also critically evaluate the professional codes and standards of practice
as they apply to nursing and midwifery.
Learning Outcomes
- Outline the structure and function of the Australian legal system;
- Discuss the ethical principles that frame nursing and midwifery;
- Compare and contrast the application of law and ethics in nursing and midwifery practice;
- Examine the legal and ethical obligations nurses and midwives have in maintaining
safety of the public;
- Critically evaluate the application of nursing and midwifery professional codes and
standards in practice.

- Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
- Participation > Class participation - (%) - Individual
- Written > Case study analysis - (40%) - Individual
- 25% Group debate; 25% Individual reflection - (50%) - Group & Individual.
Special Assessment Requirements
Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at
least 80% of scheduled tutorials/specified online content; achieve a cumulative score
of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
