Available to Bachelor of Health Science (Physician Assistant) students only.
This subject is available to students enrolled in level 3 of the Bachelor of Health
Science (Physician Assistant). It will cover PA professional role, evidence-based
medicine, public health topics and board exam review. The emphasis will be on clinical
decision making, public health and health promotion and the health of special populations
including Indigenous Australians. The topics will be presented in an integrated fashion
across the study period. Students will undertake clinical placements in GP settings
that may include general outpatient adult medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and
sports medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, care of diabetic patients and nephrology.
In addition, clinical placements may take place in the inpatient setting in general
internal medicine, internal medicine specialties and emergency medicine. Students
may also undertake an elective placement.
Learning Outcomes
- by the end of the course, demonstrated sound graduate physician assistant level skills
in clinical decision making and procedures;
- demonstrated level of preparedness for practice by passing the equivalent of the US
National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants certification exam;
- demonstrate advancing level skills in clinical decision making including formulation
of differential diagnoses and treatment plans;
- demonstrated sound understanding of the physician assistant role, including working
in a physician assistant doctor partnership in a delegated role, and the ability to
promote the new medical profession within the existing health framework of Australia.
