This module has been developed specifically for allied health professionals in the following professions: Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Social Work.

This module extends rural generalist knowledge and skills in service provision for consumers living in rural and remote communities affected by trauma and crisis. Participants will learn the causes of trauma, impacts of trauma, principles of trauma informed care, assessments tools and interventions, local, state and national services for people affected by trauma and crisis, and how to identify and respond to vicarious trauma. This module has a focus on safety and cultural considerations in relation to assessment, intervention and referral. Through the assessment task, participants will consolidate their knowledge of trauma and crisis by producing a narrated slide presentation (that applies knowledge to a case scenario) which can be used as a work-based educational resource.

Learning Outcomes

  • Combine advanced knowledge and skills in trauma-informed care and crisis interventions to perform and advise on appropriate assessment, interventions and referral to local, state and national psychosocial supports for consumers in rural and/or remote contexts, with a focus on safety and cultural considerations.

Passing requirements: achieve satisfactory for all assessment.

Prerequisites: Participants are responsible for ensuring they are practicing in accordance with the regulatory instruments of their specific allied health profession, within their own personal scope of practice and experience level and in accordance with the policies of their employer.
