This subject continues from ML5301 in the study of the clinical aspects of biochemical
analysis. Endocrine function and analysis of disorders, protein and immunoglobulin
determination, therapeutic drug monitoring and tumour markers, iron and lipid disorders.
The issues of enzyme analysis and immunoassays will be discussed and practised. Advanced
analytical methods will be introduced. The subject will use case study tutorial sessions
to facilitate the teaching of the clinical interpretation of results. This subject
completes the professional competency required for a graduate clinical biochemistry,
medical laboratory scientist.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an integrated theoretical and technical knowledge of basic methods of
clinical chemical analysis;
- demonstrate an integrated theoretical and technical knowledge of quality assurance
application and interpretation;
- apply recognized methods and tools of clinical biochemistry in a clinical/medical
investigative context;
- reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement
ongoing personal and professional development needs, relevant to clinical biochemistry
and working as a professional medical laboratory scientist;
- exercise judgment to interpret and comment on data collected during practical/clinical
sessions and the interpretation of clinical case studies.

- Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (25%) - Individual.
Special Assessment Requirements
Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more; At least 50% in practical component
including on-course assessment; At least 50% in the Theory Examination
