MD8023 - Communication and Collaboration in Rural and Remote Medicine

Available to Masters of Rural and Remote Medicine or Postgraduate Diploma of Rural and Remote Medicine students only or by permission of Head of School.

This subject will equip the student with communication skills for particular individuals and in specific contexts including communication for effective disaster management, for statutory and legal reporting and with different cultural and inter-professional groups, and using a variety of communication modes and technologies.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of patient centred care and advocacy effectively and sensitively to the patient, carer, and interdisciplinary health teams;
  • Analyse advocacy at the public health and policy level;
  • Communicate and collaborate with consulting or receiving clinical personnel and agencies responsible for key population health functions including public health services, health workers from many disciplines, employer groups and local government;
  • Provide direct and remote clinical supervision and support to nurses, junior medical staff and students;
  • Write clinical documentation in accordance with legal and professional standards and provide accurate and ethical certification when required for sickness, employment, social benefits and other purposes;
  • Participate in disaster planning and hypothetical implementation and post-incident analysis and debriefing.

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Case study analysis - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Research report - (50%) - Individual.

Special Assessment Requirements

Satisfactory completion of clinical components of the subject including supervisor reports.
