Available to any experienced medical practitioner currently working in a rural or
remote location.
This subject presents definitions and concepts of rural health care, a description
of the rural health care policy environment in Australia, and data on the health status
of rural and remote population. The student is led to investigate concepts and challenges
related to working as a rural health professional. For experienced health professionals
it is an opportunity to reflect from an academic perspective on their own practice.
For junior health professionals it is an opportunity to learn about living and practising
in rural and remote contexts.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe diverse rural and remote cultures in Australia and overseas;
- Analyse new and emerging rural communities;
- Compare the health of rural and remote communities from local, national and international
health perspectives;
- Apply the theoretical roles of a rural health professional to specific rural and remote
contexts;
- Define concepts, policies, strategies and initiatives applicable to rural and remote
health care.
