This subject provides an opportunity for students to study in a non-English speaking
country for up to a full trimester/semester (8-13 weeks). Through this subject, students
will develop knowledge of a language other than English and will acquire skills to
assist them in becoming more effective intercultural communicators. Students are required
to complete a minimum of 90 hours of formal language instruction in the host country
during this subject and will engage in excursions, field trips as well as (where possible)
home-stay accommodation to support their learning.
There are additional charges for this subject; please contact the School for details.
Learning Outcomes
- critically reflect on the study abroad experience, evaluating the complex and multifaceted
relationship between languages, cultures, communication and identity;
- demonstrate ability to communicate in the language of the host country;
- synthesise strategies to navigate issues that may arise in international communication
to address linguistic and cultural differences.
Subject Assessment
- Organised by host university (cross-institutional study). Students complete assessments
overseas set by the host university. We receive their results once they return and
convert them into our JCU results.
