Learning Outcomes

  • develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of the relevant statutory based offences, excuses and defences and the approach of the courts to their interpretation;
  • develop a general knowledge and understanding of some of the theories and concepts that underpin the criminal law;
  • reflect upon the values and assumptions inherent in the criminal law, and the impact/implications of that law on individuals and Australian society;
  • Students will enhance and develop the following skills: Locating primary and secondary legal sources and the extraction and critical evaluation of the principles that emanate from those sources; the application of statutory interpretation and the doctrine of precedent; legal problem solving; the application of knowledge to respond to a range of legal scenarios; the ability to critically analyse the criminal law; the ability to research primary and secondary sources relevant to criminal law; and the improvement of written and oral communication skills, in particular formal legal writing.
