HS5803 Lifestyle Medicine Assessment and Prescription is a core subject of the Graduate
Diploma and Master in Lifestyle Medicine. This subject provides a blended theoretical
and practical learning process on the assessment and prescription of lifestyle and
social health factors including optimising nutrition, fasting, physical activity,
sleep, mental wellbeing and mind-body practices, social connection, connection with
the natural world and minimising harmful screen and substance use. Students will learn
to make lifestyle and social prescription recommendations for the optimisation of
human wellbeing and longevity as well as prevention and management of common chronic
diseases including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, brain and neurological
disease, gastrointestinal disease, mental illness, women's and men's health conditions,
musculoskeletal disorders, oncological and immune disorders. Where safe and appropriate,
students will also learn to evaluate the options for deprescribing medications for
these disorders (deprescribing should only be done by medical professionals). Students
will learn to adapt lifestyle and social assessment and prescriptions that are appropriate
for varied geographical and cultural backgrounds. This subject will also provide students
with the opportunity to experience an interdisciplinary team-based approach to improving
patient health outcomes from a lifestyle medicine perspective.
Learning Outcomes
- Integrate lifestyle screening assessments into health settings and clinical practice;
- Generate appropriate lifestyle and social prescriptions for health and wellbeing and
the prevention and management of common chronic diseases;
- Adapt and integrate lifestyle and social assessment and prescriptions that are appropriate
to varied geographical and cultural backgrounds;
- Work as part of interdisciplinary team to make patient assessments and provide social
prescription recommendations.
