In this subject, students are guided in their reading of academic texts. The structures
of texts are explained; vocabulary is clarified, and students are required to engage
with the texts and find the key ideas, arguments and information. Students discuss
the concepts and ideas using the new vocabulary. Students are given practice in writing
up these ideas and information in short answer and paragraph length responses to comprehension
and analysis questions on texts, and by writing reports and essays. Students are taught
how to research and evaluate sources; read and take notes; paraphrase and quote; cite
and reference; plan and write reports and essays. Throughout the subject, students
use written and spoken texts as sources of information, where students practise their
listening and reading skills. Students develop their speaking skills through tutorial
discussion and when presenting their group reports. Students are taught to review
their writing and correct grammatical and lexical errors (editing).
