This subject provides engagement with processes and methods of social research, and
particularly the types of research questions and environments that researchers are
likely to encounter in development work. Students will be guided through the four
key stages of research - formulating research Questions, gathering data, analysing
data, and writing up - in order to design their own research project. Attention will
be given to research ethics, working across cultures, researcher positionality, and
the politics and power dynamics of conducting research with and within local communities.
The primary emphasis of the subject is on qualitative research methods and methodologies.
