This subject focuses on techniques of site survey, urban analysis and design, and
reviews the significance of context. The main objective is to develop skills related
to the description, evaluation and analysis of urban spaces, and the application of
this understanding to a range of design scales (from masterplan to site design). The
studio lays the foundations for the development of design responses that are effective
and appropriate to their setting, providing an essential base from which students
can progress to urban planning and design practice upon completing their degrees.
Learning Outcomes
- undertake site analysis, planning and design at a range of scales;
- develop a design process that enables the achievement of project requirements;
- research, analyse and interpret the implications of biophysical, economic, social
and cultural characteristics and values for urban design within a design framework;
- consider concepts of site design theory, including spatial experience, cultural requirements
and place meaning;
- relate three dimensional technical data to site understanding;
- communicate analytical and design ideas, graphically and in writing.
