EV3252 - Indigenous Environmental Management

Credit points: 03
Year: 2019
Student Contribution Band: Band 2
Administered by: College of Science and Engineering

This subject explores Indigenous people's role in environmental management in both Australia and across the world. Students obtain an introduction to core issues and concepts that reflect and access Indigenous perspectives on environmental management issues through a 4-day field trip, and an off-campus 8 week self-study program inclusive of pre-recorded lectures and readings. The field trip will enable students to meet with traditional owners in Far North Queensland and take part in learning discussions and activities related to Indigenous perspectives and goals in environmental management of their ancestral lands. Students are subsequently guided towards resources to enable them to synthesise their new understandings and complete the assessment requirements.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the Australian historical and political contexts of legislation and policy relating to land ownership and control of the Indigenous Estate, resource use and management of land and sea country and how native title (including rights and interests) affect contemporary environmental management practices;
  • demonstrate independent observational and analytical skills applicable to the identification and generation of effective solutions to the planning and management of the Indigenous Estate both in Australia and internationally;
  • exhibit theoretical and technical knowledge of the issues that face the planning and management of the Indigenous Estate and a demonstrated ability to critically assess both current and proposed solutions to those issues;
  • create a Plan template for a specialised Indigenous environmental management plan that applies knowledge of broader environmental plan making processes and implementation techniques.
