What forms of media and texts do people use to write about themselves and their lives?
How do we read stories that are based on real events and real people? This subject
offers students the opportunity to learn about the practice and theory of one of the
key forms of contemporary storytelling: life writing. Students will sample a range
of life narrative forms such as memoir, digital life narratives, and personal essays.
We will discuss theories of auto/biographical representation; examine the cultural
context for the production and circulation of life stories; and develop tools to identify
and critique different genres of and approaches to writing lives. Students will also
get the opportunity to produce their own piece of life writing in their chosen genre,
drawing on relevant theories and techniques.
- identify key concepts relating to the theory and practice of life writing;
- evaluate and critique life narrative texts and media in relation to key practical,
ethical, and theoretical issues, and demonstrate analytical skills in written communication;
- demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, and create a piece of life narrative from
inception to entry level publication standard.
- Invigilated > Tutorial attendance and participation - (20%)
- Critical Essay - (30%)
- Major Assessment - (50%).
