An engaging and comprehensive tour through the major authors and texts of great literature,
this subject will give students a firm grasp of the timeline of English. What makes
these books so important, or what makes people think they are? In EL1009, students
gain a clear understanding of major literary periods and literary movements across
time and place. This subject provides a crucial background for the study of literature
in English and wider cultural understanding. A foundation of literary and historical
understanding will be laid out through the lecture series and textbook. Closer examination
of key texts will allow students to appraise them within established paradigms. Literature
students will develop the capacity to communicate an understanding of the interpretation
of literary texts through analytical and argumentative writing. Creative Writing students
will communicate high-level knowledge of narrative technique through the production
and analysis of a literary text.
