EG5310 - Professional Placement

The Professional Placement subject focuses on giving students a first-hand industry work experience in related engineering disciplines to produce job ready graduates. Students are required to complete online modules (15 hours total) on career development, developed by JCU Careers, before starting their Professional Placement Engineering Practice. Online career modules develop resume writing skills, interview techniques, team work and effective workplace communication skills. In Professional PlacementEngineering Practice, students work in engineering projects in industries, under a supervision of a professional engineer for 130 hours, spread over 12 weeks. Students may work in one or more projects and be associated with one or more industries to meet the Professional PlacementEngineering Practice requirements. Students are required to reflect their learnings in the ePortfolios; they are also strongly advised to keep weekly journals of work logs. Students are required to submit an internship report and deliver a presentation.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify critical aspects of professional behaviour within the professional context and conduct themselves accordingly;
  • demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving skills and professional judgement by finding solutions to complex industry problems;
  • engage in a professional project with a degree of independence and accountability, in accordance with Engineers Australia code of ethics;
  • communicate, in both written and oral forms, to multi-disciplinary teams and target audiences;
  • critically reflect on skills, knowledge and attitudes to develop and manage professional learning and employability to prepare for future employment;
  • engage and negotiate with team members and stakeholders on a workplace project.
