ED4306 - Students with Reading Difficulties

This subject focuses on teaching pupils who have difficulties with reading. Students
have a variety of reading difficulties and have difficulties for a variety of reasons,
although a significant proportion of students have key issues in common. It is inappropriate
to attempt the same single approach for all pupils who have difficulty, and therefore
the teacher's task is to devise the most appropriate program for each individual.
In order to approach this task a teacher requires two fundamental resources apart
from other teaching skills. The first is an awareness of the complexities of reading
so that the task is not underestimated and individual problems may be better understood.
The second is knowledge of a range of assessment and teaching techniques so that the
teacher has sufficient resources to draw upon when devising individual programs. The
aim of this subject is to enhance participants' knowledge of the reading process,
difficulties that pupils may experience with reading, and assessment and teaching
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of models of the reading process;
- critically examine and select appropriately from a range of strategies for assessing
and teaching pupils who have difficulties with reading;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the nature and causes of difficulties
that pupils may experience in learning to read.
|It is assumed that participants have a strong knowledge about teaching and, in particular,
the teaching of reading. This subject builds on observations about children who experience
difficulty with reading and should represent a way of helping you to cope more effectively
with this challenge. While ED4496 or the earlier ED4403 are not prerequisites for
this subject, it is preferable for students to undertake ED4306 after doing one of
those because of the need to come to this subject with an understanding of the reading
