This subject is an introduction to teaching Arts Education in Primary School. It will explore the five (5) arts genres essential to the Australian Curriculum - Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts. It will focus on developing knowledge, pedagogy and skills, through Making, and Responding to Art. Students will have opportunities to develop and share strategies to help children explore creative expression. As both artists and audience members, they will respond to, analyse and interpret various styles of visual and performing arts. They will develop resources for classroom teaching, and knowledge with which to promote the arts throughout schools and school communities. The subject will be informed by the emerging Australian Curriculum: The Arts Foundation to Year 10.

Learning Outcomes

  • make and respond to artworks critically, appreciatively and analytically;
  • apply knowledge and skills in each of the Arts subjects - Dance, Drama, Music, Media Arts and Visual Arts - to demonstrate arts literacy and an ability to use this knowledge to enhance teaching strategies;
  • create 'virtual' learning environments, using either technology or imagination, through suspension of disbelief;
  • demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.
